Bow Work Station

Bow Work Station

Please view large.

I love work benches and their assorted tools and paraphernalia. Unless it's an automotive work bench or very basic carpentry tools I don't usually understand what I'm looking at. But I still like them. They make me think of artisans and people who really know a highly technical skill with their hands.

This is the work bench where all the bow repair and re-hairing goes on at Tulsa Violin Shop. I didn't know the purpose of even an 1/8th of the tools shown here. The bow master was not there the day I was shooting, but I liked how the lamp appeared to be examining the bow himself.

Did you know that bows are made from horses' tails?

Purfling tools

Purfling tools

I'm just not good enough yet with hand tools to do the job on the tailpiece.
Using both blades cuts a channel .030 too wide for purf.
Using a single blade and adjusting it
for a second pass too unreliable.
Hmm dremel with a fine bit and an
inventive plunger/ guide? Risky.
Fake it. Apply a sealer, mask with painters tape use the hand tool to score the tape and shoot it with spray paint and live to fight it another day.
It might have been easier to cut the channel while the tailpiece was still part of a big block of wood.
